About the Discipline and Department
Information technology (IT) is "the study, design, development, application, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware”. When computer and communications technologies are combined, the result is Information Technology, or “InfoTech". Information technology is a general term that describes any technology that helps to produce, communicate, store, protect, process, transmit and retrieve information.
Information Technology has changed the face of the world with its various upcoming technologies in diverse fields of industry and education. The career prospects for the younger generation in Information Technology are stretched over a wide domain, which comprise service industry such as banking insurance and communication. Other areas that encompass scope for IT and have grown in recent year are medicine, governance, entertainment and multimedia, scientific research, business intelligence solutions and knowledge discovery in databases. Students enrolling to this degree programme learn courses which reflect the cutting edge technologies used in the IT industry. Emphasis of B.Tech. Information Technology curriculum is on computer science, software development, networking, communication, web engineering, security, hardware design and management. This course is designed to provide a foundation of basic subjects like software development, networking, computer architecture and design, programming, operating systems, multimedia and graphics communications. Specialized knowledge on the analysis and design of information systems, information security, mobile communications, artificial intelligence, soft computing, digital signal processing computer vision and expert systems is imparted. In addition there are various electives related to IT areas. Further, industrial training forms an important component of Information Technology curriculum so as the students are able to meet the challenges faced by today’s industries. The Department of Information Technology has state-of-art laboratories in the various disciplines such as object oriented programming Lab., Database management lab., CASE tools lab., graphics/multimedia lab., Data structures Lab., Cisco Lab and Fundamentals of Computer Programming Lab. The thrust areas of the department are communication technology, computer networking, optical communication, data mining and data warehousing.
